Following Wednesday’s pump – which saw Bitcoin jump about 10 percent within a day – the top digital asset is now trading slightly above $72,700. However, an interesting pattern is emerging in the BTC/XAU chart, where it looks like digital gold may outperform real gold in the short-term.
Bitcoin forms bullish pattern against gold
For the uninitiated, the BTC/XAU chart measures 1 BTC in ounces of gold. A rising ratio means Bitcoin is outperforming gold, while a falling ratio means gold is outperforming Bitcoin.
4 years ago, the ratio broke below a symmetrical triangle in November 2022, then declined roughly the full height of the pattern – about 26 percent – into a low around December 2022.
Fast-forward to 2026 and now the market is seeing a larger triangle being formed, both wider and taller than the one seen in 2022. Although the ratio has moved higher, it still remains within the triangle since this recent Wednesday’s price increase.
This means BTC may now be attempting an upside breakout against gold. The top of pattern – or the apex – converging around a decision point which could be around September 28, 2026.
If 2026 ends up producing an upside breakout, then the BTC/XAU ratio could surge as much as 69.5 percent higher against gold, targeting 23.6 to 26.1 ounce of gold per BTC, roughly $106,500 to $117,800 at today’s gold price near $4,512.
In contrast, if 2026 produces a downside break – like November 202 – then the BTC/XAU ratio can move 38.5 percent lower, targeting 9.2 to 9.6 ounce of gold per BTC, roughly $41,500 to $43,300 at today’s gold price.
BTC steadily improving its performance
To recall, BTC has been showing signs of strength against gold for a while. On July 12, BTC held its own against the precious metal as it defended the $62,000 price level while gold and silver lost value.
Recent data also suggests solidification of BTC’s fundamentals as it sees increasing institutional adoption. On Tuesday, on-chain data showed that BTC’s price pullbacks are becoming increasingly shallower, signifying its coming of age as an asset.
That said, some are seeing BTC’s recent rally to $72,000 with a degree of suspicion. On Thursday, Glassnode remarked that the digital asset’s upward move is just a local rally, and not exactly a trend reversal.
