KyberSwap launches Smart Settlement for real-time onchain routing

Kyber Network introduces Smart Settlement
Share this article

KyberSwap has announced a new type of onchain execution layer called Smart Settlement, which aims to help close the gap between what is quoted for a swap and what actually gets settled when being executed. Typically, a decentralized exchange (DEX) aggregator finds the best route to execute an order based on prices at the time of quoting. Then, when each order is executed, there may be a different liquidity amount in the DEX than at the time that the quote was placed, leaving trades exposed to execution‑time risks.

Examples of this execution risk include liquidity disappearing, increasing or decreasing order size due to front-running, Proprietary Automated Market Maker (PropAMM) operators widening spreads after attracting order flow, and the price of the tokens being volatile enough to cause a route to stale before the transaction lands.

The problem Smart Settlement solves

The main problem that Smart Settlement addresses is the slippage limits on a swap. For example, a user has two options when making their swap: (1) If the user sets a slippage limit that is too low for the transaction, then the transaction will revert if the number of tokens that the user would receive is too far below the expected amount. (2) If the user sets the slippage limit too high, then the transaction is exposed to poor execution or Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) attacks.

Smart Settlement removes this trade-off on slippage by creating real-time intelligence in the moment of settlement. The KyberSwap smart contract will have multiple candidate pools already available before executing the swap, and will compare those candidates onchain and atomically select the pool that gives the highest token output. All within the same transaction, with no extra steps for the user.

Key benefits

  • More tokens received: If another pool becomes better by execution time, then Smart Settlement switches to it
  • Minimized slippage: Checking pool conditions closer to the time of settlement helps reduce the difference between the quote and the actual output
  • Protection against PropAMM spoofing: Compares actual pool output onchain, avoiding pools that widen spreads after attracting flow
  • Resilience against MEV and sandwich attacks: Even if the initially selected pool was “front-run,” Smart Settlement can recognize that the rate has declined and “hedge” on using a better alternative
  • Defense against Just-in-Time (JIT) liquidity removal: Checks whether temporary liquidity has disappeared and routes through deeper pools instead
  • Better execution for volatile and meme pairs: Great for fast‑moving assets where pool conditions change in seconds

What Smart Settlement means for EVM onchain routing

Smart Settlement marks a major step forward for Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) swap execution. There is clearly progress beyond just finding the best quote; it means ensuring that the outcome executed is as strong as possible once that transaction settles onchain. Through the introduction of an atomic execution level pool comparison in real time, KyberSwap has shifted the routing of each of its quote transactions from static quoting to adaptive execution-aware intelligence.
