Elon Musk’s Tesla has unveiled its hands-free “Hey Grok” assistant to add a power boost to its autonomous fleet of cars. The feature will essentially allow Tesla drivers to initiate conversations with the car without having to physically interact with the screen hardware.

The update has started to roll out the xAI-developed Grok assistant to its newer car models as part of its Spring 2026 software deployment.

In Tesla’s own words

In an official blog detailing the Grok AI deployment in Tesla cars the automaker said drivers will be given the option to select a personality for their Grok assistants which would include different voices and tones — “ranging from Storyteller to Unhinged”.

“You can use Grok to issue navigation commands, allowing you to search for and reach your destination without interacting with your vehicle’s touchscreen,” the blog noted.

In a demo video shared on Wednesday, Tesla showed how drivers will be able to start a conversation with the voice assistant by the “Hey Grok” command and end the session with a simple “Goodbye”.

The feature is currently in its Beta mode for Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck vehicles loaded with AMD processors, vehicle software version 2025.26 or higher, as well as a Premium Connectivity subscription that retains for $9.99/month. Non-subscribers of the Premium Connectivity versions would have to ensure a stable WiFi connection to be able to use the Grok feature for free.

“Grok may become available for additional Tesla vehicles with over-the-air software updates in the future. Grok availability is subject to change or end at any time,” the blog noted.

On Grok activation and chat security

The main-screen on eligible Tesla car will display the Grok app. On Tuesday, Musk had re-shared a screenshot of how the Grok menu appears on the car screens.

Those looking to enable the voice assistant feature in their self-driving cars will have to do so by approving the “Hey Grok” wake word option from the Settings menu on the Grok section.

Tesla claims that the conversations between Grok and the drivers will remain anonymous to the company. Tesla users will be allowed to sign-into the feature as guests without having to hold a Grok account.

“Interactions with Grok are securely processed by xAI in line with their privacy notice. Conversations are not linked to you or your vehicle,” the company informed.

Musk, the marketing maverick

Musk is presently preparing for a historic Wall Street debut for the newly created entity merging SpaceX with xAI. The entity is planning a Nasdaq listing under the ticker SPCX as it eyes a hit the valuation of $2 trillion. After merging his two companies earlier in February, the newly formed entity had reportedly hit the valuation of $1.25 trillion.

Musk debuting the cross-promotion of Grok inside Tesla’s ecosystem seems like a strategic move to amp-up xAI’s thrust into the market ahead of the IPO.

The aggressive rollout and public cross-promotion of Grok inside Tesla’s ecosystem is not happening in a vacuum. It directly aligns with Elon Musk’s broader financial maneuvers as he prepares for a historic Wall Street debut.

Sources familiar with the matter have told the media that Goldman Sachs has been selected as the lead underwriter for Musk’s planned IPO. The prospectus for this IPO could go public around June 19 as Musk has already submitted a confidential filing to the SEC last month.
