Ethereum (ETH) is seeing an interesting split in terms of exchange behavior. The second-largest cryptocurrency with a market cap of over $224 billion is eyeing the $2,000 target, and the latest exchange data might just work as the required bullish catalyst for the move.
Ethereum reserves see pullback on Gemini, Bitfinex
According to exchange data received on Friday, ETH reserves on 2 major cryptocurrency exchanges – Gemini and Bitfinex – have seen a decline over the past few months.
Specifically, Gemini’s ETH reserve declined to 384,400 ETH on Friday, its lowest level since March 2024. It marks a drop of roughly 188,600 ETH, or 32.9 percent, from 573,000 ETH recorded on April 23.

Bitfinex has also recorded a substantial decline, as its Ethereum reserve fell from 2.71 million ETH on May 11 to 2.24 million ETH, a reduction of approximately 470,000 ETH, or 17.3 percent.
Interestingly enough, the top cryptocurrency exchange Binance’s ETH reserves remained relatively steady at around 3.8 million ETH – almost the same as on May 11.
Combined, Gemini and Bitfinex now hold approximately 658,600 fewer ETH than at their respective April and May reference levels. At Ethereum’s current price near $1,880, that difference represents roughly $1.24 billion worth of ETH.
While lower exchange balances can reduce the amount of ETH immediately held on trading platforms, reserve data alone does not establish investor intent or determine the asset’s next price direction.
Still, the dwindling ETH reserves on Gemini and Bitfinex could just be the beginning of a bullish trend that benefits ETH somewhere down the line in the coming months. If trends continue, ETH’s supply-scarcity could come back into focus, resulting in extraordinary price appreciation for the digital asset.
ETH set to stage a recovery?
As to where ETH might be headed in the short-term, crypto analyst Ali Martinez shared the following 1-hour ETH chart, saying that as long as ETH stays above the $1,850 support level, a move toward $2,060 is possible.
The phenomenon of ETH reserves declining on exchanges is not new. Over the past month, ETH holdings on crypto trading avenues have fallen by almost a million.
On Thursday, the ETH MVRV indicator flashed a golden cross ahead of a potential recovery. That said, there are still some concerns that ETH may not have yet hit its cycle bottom, and room for further decline still exists.
