Bitcoin is seeing fewer short-term holders and that could be a bullish signal

Bitcoin is seeing fewer short-term holders and that could be a bullish signal

Fresh on-chain data received on Thursday shows that Bitcoin short-term holders are rapidly declining in number. A fewer number of BTC STHs has historically coincided with an ensuing bullish rally in the digital asset.

Bitcoin STHs fall to yearly lows

According to the following chart, the proportion of holders who have held BTC for less than a day is around 1.2 percent. Similarly, the ones who have held it for between 1 day to 1 week is 2 percent.

Meanwhile, BTC STHs who have held the digital asset for more than a week but less than a month hovers around 5.6 percent, whereas the proportion stands at 6.7 percent for those who have held it for more than a month but less than 3 months.

Finally, the cohort which has held BTC for more than 3 months but less than 6 months is around 8.1 percent. Notably, such a trend is usually seen at the end of a prolonged bear market – confirmed in the chart shared above.

On the other end of the spectrum, it also confirms that the share of BTC long-term holders is steadily increasing. Past data shows that BTC held by LTHs is less mobile – in contrast to that held by STH – which stays very active in the market and is highly sensitive to price changes.

At the same time, the current dynamics show that organic demand for BTC hasn’t quite returned yet. This aligns with the recent exchange-data insight which showed that although the BTC derivatives market is showing signs of life, the spot demand remains sluggish.

It is worth highlighting that every BTC purchased in the market creates a new STH Unspent Transaction Output. As a result, when demand makes a return, the market sees an increase in the share of supply held by STHs – eventually resulting in a market top.

Miners refuse to sell BTC

As the percentage of BTC STHs trends down, miners are also showing peculiar behavior in that they are refusing to part ways with the holdings, despite the thin revenue they’ve been generating over the past few months.

BTC is likely to show volatile price action in the coming weeks, thanks to its falling liquidity across crypto trading platforms.

At the same time, institutional interest in the cryptocurrency continues to steadily trend upwards. On Monday, BlackRock Canada unveiled two new ETFs, with one of them allocating 3 percent funds toward BTC.
