Tether’s KPMG audit proves $6.8B surplus in landmark stablecoin clean bill

Tether completes the largest inaugural financial audit in history

Tether announced the successful completion of a landmark event for both the company and the broader crypto industry: a full independent financial audit for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2025, conducted by the Big Four accounting firm Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler U.S.

This inaugural financial audit, described as the largest in history, resulted in KPMG issuing an unqualified audit opinion, marking the most favorable outcome a company can receive.

Tether completed its inaugural full financial audit with KPMG U.S., the largest of its kind in stablecoin history. KPMG issued an unqualified opinion, the most positive an auditor can give, with no reservations or exceptions. As of Dec. 31, 2025, Tether’s reserves exceeded liabilities by a significant USD 6.814 billion.

KPMG’s comprehensive audit and $6.8B surplus confirmed

Per the firm, the audit was exhaustive, going far beyond the quarterly attestations Tether had previously published. KPMG’s team examined not just the headline reserve figures but also the transactions, internal systems, ownership records, valuations, and counterparties behind Tether’s financial statements.

KPMG didn’t just take Tether’s word for it or look at digital reports. In a massive show of due diligence, the audit team actually went and physically counted every single gold bar Tether owns to make sure they were all there.

The audit proved that Tether is in great financial shape, showing that at the end of 2025, they had a solid $6.814 billion surplus.

Industry reactions and Tether’s new standard

The leadership running Tether is calling this a major turning point for the entire industry. CEO Paolo Ardoino said, “For years, some detractors said an audit of Tether could not be completed… We have once again proven them wrong.” He made sure to highlight that this unqualified opinion basically confirms that Tether has a “clean audit.”

Also, CFO Simon McWilliams called it a landmark in their commitment to transparency, noting the company’s finance team stepped “into the highest league” by completing this ambitious project with a Big Four auditor.

This financial audit is a significant escalation from Tether’s previous independent attestations, moving beyond snapshot checks to a comprehensive annual review.

A higher benchmark for stablecoin accountability

Tether’s successful completion of the KPMG audit carries profound implications beyond its own operations. As a financial backbone for hundreds of millions of users globally, in terms of providing savings, payments, and access to U.S. dollars, thus stablecoins are now critical global infrastructure.

Above all, by voluntarily subjecting itself to this highest level of scrutiny, Tether has effectively raised the bar for the entire stablecoin market, setting a new benchmark for transparency and governance.

This move also aligns with shifting regulatory expectations, signaling that Tether is proactively building the institutional-grade accountability necessary for the next era of digital finance, and that could definitely help the ecosystem.
