Samsung’s stablecoin plans are starting to take shape with discussions initiated with Dunamu, the parent of South Korea’s Upbit exchange. The smartphone giant has started discussing stablecoin support and the integration of digital assets into its broader ecosystem with Dunamu.

From Samsung, its SDS unit that focuses on IT services, enterprise AI, and cloud computing, is leading stablecoin-related conversations. On Thursday, Samsung SDS reported a net profit of KRW 184.1 billion (US$127.6 million) for Q2 2026 — which was 4.6 percent up from 2025. The unit’s overall revenue stood at KRW 3.7 trillion ($2.58 billion) for the period between April and June.

Samsung’s stablecoin exploration

Lee Jun-hee, the CEO of Samsung SDS said the company is looking to take Dunamu’s help in expanding the infrastructure market for digital assets, including stablecoins. Upbit, afterall, has been among South Korea’s biggest crypto exchange which was launched and managed by Dunamu.

“We have already secured differentiated business capabilities in digital asset infrastructure through the Korea Securities Depository’s tokenized securities platform project and through end-to-end validation of the full stablecoin process from issuance to settlement,” reports quoted Lee as saying.

The report of Samsung’s ongoing discussions with Dunamu came just days after the company said it was going to add stablecoin support to its Wallet service. During its annual Galaxy Unpacked event last week, Samsung said it is looking to cater to the diverse demands of its Wallet users, which include stablecoins.

“This will make Samsung one of the first major mobile brands to bring native stablecoins to a smartphone, enabling fast and trusted digital value transfers,” Samsung product manager Lee Dinham had said at the time.

The development will allow Galaxy users hold stablecoins, collect spending rewards, and process transactions from within the existing Samsung wallet ecosystem.

Why Upbit, why Dunamu?

Dunamu is a Seoul-based blockchain financial service provider. It launched its Upbit exchange in October 2017. With Dunamu’s roots deeply embedded in South Korea’s regulatory ecosystem, it seems like a natural choice for Samsung to explore a digital assets-related partnership with.

Months before Samsung officially made the announcement of adding stablecoins to its Wallet service, it had started to fuel its ambitions.

In May, the tech mammoth invested around $408 million (KRW 612.8 billion) into Dunamu for a four percent stake in the company. As part of the deal, Samsung managed to acquire 1.39 million Dunamu shares.

While this relationship with Samsung is the foundation of Dunamu’s stablecoin partnership with the company, Upbit by itself also has been exploring more stablecoin-related services garnering expertise in handing these assets.

For now, more information from Samsung on its stablecoin-related plans remain awaited. The company has recently refreshed its Galaxy Fold and Flip smartphones lineup with latest models.

For the second quarter of 2026, Samsung reported a massive surge in AI chip demand. It reported a revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion (roughly $120 billion) and KRW 89.5 trillion (roughly $63 billion) in operating profit.

For Samsung and Dunamu, immediate challenges in rolling out these stablecoin services will include navigating regulatory compliance, merchant acceptance, technical performance, key custody, and user perceptions around these reserved-assets backed tokens.
