Crypto market traders appear to be getting bored of trading Bitcoin (BTC), the top cryptocurrency by market cap. Over the past month, BTC has surged a modest 4.9 percent, not the kind of returns crypto enthusiasts are used to.
Bitcoin losing momentum to altcoins
According to exchange data received on Friday, Bitcoin spot trading volumes on exchanges like Binance and others have dropped to yearly lows.
Specifically, these exchanges report that BTC trading volumes have crashed to those last seen in 2023 when the market was coming out of a prolonged bear phase. This signals the overall lack of interest in trading BTC amid the prevailing sentiment.
What’s interesting is that even though BTC trading volumes are declining, altcoin trading volumes are making a resurgence. In fact, altcoins now represent the largest share of trading volume on Binance.
For example, in May 2026, BTC dominated trading and was responsible for almost 40 percent of volumes, in comparison to ETH and other altcoins. However, the picture has changed significantly in July 2026.
Notably, today altcoins dominate trading volume at over 60 percent – compared to just about 22 percent for BTC and 18 percent for ETH.
It’s the clearest sign of investor boredom setting in, and also an indication of active capital rotation from large-cap coins to medium and small-cap digital assets, pointing toward a potential altcoin season.
Is the altcoin season upon us?
For the uninitiated, altcoin season is a period when altcoins collectively outperform Bitcoin, driven by capital rotation as investors shift funds from Bitcoin into higher-risk, higher-growth cryptocurrencies.
This rotation typically reflects increased risk appetite, though not every altcoin participates equally and performance can vary significantly across the market.
However, it’s worth pointing out that altcoins have seen far more sharper corrections than BTC. As a result, some investors are hoping that they’d be able to outperform BTC by positioning in altcoins instead.
That said, one trading pair that must be kept a close eye on is the ETH/BTC ratio. If ETH starts outperforming BTC meaningfully over the coming weeks, expect altcoins to surge in tandem, resulting in a dump in BTC dominance in the market.
