Toncoin, or TON, is the native token of The Open Network, a Layer-1 blockchain linked to Telegram. It serves payments, transaction fees, staking, governance, wallets, apps, storage, and other Web3 services. The network targets fast, low-cost activity for users who access blockchain tools through Telegram. Telegram developers introduced TON in 2018, which was diverted due to regulatory difficulties. In 2020, the network was abandoned, and the withdrawal of Telegram was followed by an adoption by open-source developers. The TON Foundation helps to develop an ecosystem now. The TON system uses the concept of proof-of-stake as a security mechanism where the validators safeguard the network by staking the tokens. Dynamic sharding is a technique applied in the system to allocate network tasks to a path of several blockchains. Toncoin powers Telegram-linked wallets, mini-apps, GameFi products, NFTs, and decentralized storage. TON Connect lets applications link with wallets inside the ecosystem. TON Space also gives Telegram users direct wallet access within supported markets today.
