NEARAbout NEAR Protocol
NEAR Protocol is a proof-of-stake Layer-1 blockchain that targets everyday Web3 use, with an emphasis on smooth onboarding and low, predictable costs. It uses sharding to spread activity across the network so apps can run without forcing every validator to process every transaction. The NEAR token pays transaction and smart-contract fees, supports simple payments, and acts as a unit of account for computation and on-chain storage. Users and developers lock NEAR through “storage staking” to cover the data their accounts or contracts keep on-chain, then recover that balance when they delete data. Validators and delegators stake NEAR to secure the chain and earn protocol rewards. Inside the ecosystem, NEAR also supports governance processes and functions as a base asset for liquidity in DeFi, NFT markets, and gaming apps. Some teams also build AI-linked services that trigger transactions, but each product sets its own rules and risk limits.
