Cosmos is a network that can allow independent blockchains to interconnect and exchange value and data using IBC. Instead of forcing every app onto one chain, Cosmos supports “app-chains” that keep their own rules while still reaching users and assets across the wider ecosystem. ATOM is the native token of the Cosmos Hub, one of the main coordination chains in this network. Users stake ATOM to help secure the Hub and earn protocol rewards, and they use it to vote on upgrades and policy changes. ATOM also supports Hub services such as Interchain Security, where the Hub’s validator set can help secure other chains. In practice, Cosmos uses ATOM for staking, governance, and transaction fees on the Hub, while IBC links DeFi, infrastructure, and other app-chains that need cross-chain liquidity and messaging. That design helps teams launch specialized chains for trading, gaming, or data services without giving up interoperability and security options.
