‘AI has transformed how we work’: Patreon lays off 20 percent staff

AI has transformed how we work': Patreon on slashing 20 percent staff

Patreon, the California-based subscription crowdfunding platform, announced a 20 percent reduction to its work force on Thursday. While the company did zero-in on AI being transformative in working ecosystems, it claimed the laid off staffers are not being replaced by AI.

A total of 93 Patreon employees will be losing their jobs as part of these lay-offs. Annoucing the decision, company CEO Jack Conte highlighted that the business is healthy but an internal reorganization, indeed, is in the works.

Claiming that the company does not believe that AI can replace humans, Conte did say, it needs to make its internal teams more agile to keep up with the ongoing industrial developments.

“AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry, the pace of change has never been more intense, and I expect it to get even faster,” Conte’s note to the employees said.

He highlighted that replacing human roles with AI is not its aim.

“The more we have learned to use these new tools, the clearer it has become that they are not substitutes for the creativity, judgment, detail orientation, or craftsmanship that our teammates have in spades, nor do they replace the desire for human connection.”

The platform chief did, however, acknowledge that the tech, creator, and social media market that it operates in has undergone profound change over the last six months.

“We need to adjust our cost structure to ensure that we remain a stable, dependable rock for our creators as we work toward our long term ambition,” he added.

Patreon essentially allows content creators to monetize their work. Fans can pay recurring amounts or one-time fees to creators. It also lets creators connect with relevant audiences, track analytics, and generate automated billings.

The company expects that AI-powered industry transformation is only going to gather more speed and momentum in the coming times — for which its teams need to be prepared in advance.

Along with 16 weeks of pay, the company has added an additional week of pay for every full year worked at the company to its severance package. The healthcare coverage has also been extended till the end of the year for the laid-off employees.

As per its Q1 2026 results, the company holds a private valuation of approximately $4 billion and reached over $10B in total lifetime payouts to creators.

In recent months, several companies made a pivot to AI or prioritized AI spending over retaining human workers. Meta, Cloudfare, and Coinbase are among tech giants that announced massive layoffs this year — with AI in focus.
