As ether (ETH) struggles to overcome the $2,000 resistance level, the digital asset’s demand in the U.S. seems to be giving weak signals. This is evident from the so-called Coinbase premium which is deep in negative territory over the past few weeks.

ETH Coinbase premium goes negative

According to exchange data received on Tuesday, the Coinbase premium for ETH has fallen to -0.0833 – indicating that the digital asset is trading at slightly lower price on Coinbase compared to rival crypto exchange Binance.

For the uninitiated, the Coinbase Premium measures the price difference of a cryptocurrency between Coinbase and other major exchanges, such as Binance, and is used as an indicator of U.S. investor demand.

A positive Coinbase premium hints toward very strong buying interest from U.S.-based investors. On the contrary, a negative premium shows weaker demand for the underlying asset in relation to global markets.

The lower price is due to the relatively weaker demand for the digital asset in the North American country compared to the rest of the world.

Notably, U.S.-based institutions are shifting liquidity toward other markets and trading platforms, while Binance continues to attract the majority of global trading activity.

Fresh data shows that Coinbase premium had – for a little time – moved into positive territory back in April 2026 – signalling a little improvement in U.S. demand. However, this momentum proved to be very short-lived, as the index returned to negative territory at the beginning of May and has remained below zero ever since.

If this trend of negative Coinbase premium continues to remain, ETH could find it challenging to create upward momentum supported by institutional inflows.

However, if the indicator turns positive and hovers above 0, it would signal a return of U.S. institutional buying. This could potentially strengthen Ethereum’s bullish momentum, and aid price stability over the medium-term.

That being said, such a change of fortunes would need to be accompanied by higher trading volumes on Binance, and stronger investment inflows into the broader cryptocurrency market.

Limited downside for ETH

Although the negative Coinbase premium shows weak demand for ETH, some technical indicators suggest that the digital asset may be on the cusp of a long-term breakout.

Ethereum network activity seems to be picking momentum too, as the smart contract platform surpassed 425 million unique addresses on Thursday. On Wednesday, ETH miner selling reached a historic low too, suggesting the downside may be limited.
