Polygon, formerly MATIC, is the main utility token used across Polygon’s blockchain ecosystem. It pays gas on Polygon PoS, supports staking, and gives holders a role in governance. Polygon uses the POL token to keep transactions moving across payments, DeFi apps, tokenized assets, and other Ethereum-linked services. The token matters because Polygon PoS handles fast, low-cost activity while still connecting back to Ethereum. Users spend POL when they transfer funds, trade tokens, mint assets, or interact with decentralized applications. Businesses can also use Polygon infrastructure for payments and asset issuance without the higher costs often seen on Ethereum mainnet. POL also supports network security. Validators and delegators stake the token and earn rewards for helping process transactions. Polygon strengthens this setup with checkpoints, rate limits, and Ethereum anchoring. The token may also support wider incentives through Polygon’s AggLayer ecosystem.
