Midnight 3 refers to the later rollout phase of Midnight, a privacy-focused blockchain designed to support “rational privacy” in apps and finance. The platform has zero-knowledge smart contracts to allow users to prove information about data without disclosing the data itself, which can be useful for compliant identity verification, anonymous payments, and selective disclosure for DeFi and enterprise processes. NIGHT is Midnight's governance and staking token. Holders stake NIGHT to help secure the chain and vote on upgrades, while their balances generate DUST, a separate, non-transferable resource used to pay transaction fees and smart-contract execution. DUST is shielded and can decay if it sits unused, which discourages hoarding of network capacity and keeps fees tied to active use. In practice, users hold NIGHT for long-term participation and produce DUST for day-to-day activity. This split separates network security and policy from the “gas” spent on privacy-preserving transactions and data-sharing agreements, too.
