Going fine: Trump on talks with Anthropic over restoring advanced AI models

U.S. President Donald Trump, from the ongoing G7 summit in France, has signalled a potential thaw in the high-stakes standoff between Anthropic and the White House. After instructing the AI firm to suspend access foreign access two of its advanced AI models, President Trump said that conversations have been initiated with Anthropic and that they are “going fine”.

Earlier this week, the Trump administration asked Anthropic to bar oreign nationals from accessing its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. A “jailbreak” vulnerability in these models was flagged by the White House as a potential threat to the national security. The vulnerability

The friction began when the Trump administration barred foreign nationals from accessing Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models over national security concerns earlier this month. The directive was triggered by a “jailbreak” vulnerability, which as per Anthropic, was a very minor glitch.

Responding to the government’s directive, the company shut down access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all customers — “whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees”.

In an official statement released on June 12 Anthropic said, “We are complying with the government’s legal directive and are removing access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users. We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people. If this standard was applied across the industry, we believe it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers.”

On Wednesday, President Trump had lunch with world leaders and members of the AI sector. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was also part of this lunch meet. While OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Google Deepmind’s Demis Hassabis were reportedly seated next to President Trump, Amodei was across the table alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.

As per reports, the White House’s direction to Anthropic have raised concerns on Washington’s power to determine what frontier AI systems are accessible internationally.

For Anthropic particularly, the frequency of deliberations with the U.S. government has only increased over the last few months.

In January 2026, Anthropic walked away from a $200 million contract with the Pentagon citing concerns about letting the military use its powerful AI models. In response, the Trump administration terminated the contract and threatened blacklisting the company as a “supply chain risk”. Anthropic subsequently sued the U.S. government in March 2026 over the strike and the case is active and still ongoing.

For the AI firm, the stakes are high at this point as it prepares to go public later this year. Earlier this month, the Claude-maker submitted a confidential Form S-1 filing with the SEC for a preliminary review.
